About
Strategy that holds when the rules move.
Most strategic plans disintegrate on contact with reality. A board signs off a three-year roadmap; within eighteen months a tariff or a takeover has made half of it obsolete. The problem is rarely the analysis. It is the assumption underneath the planning cycle: that the world will hold still while you execute.
We work from the opposite assumption. Firms that endure reassess as routine and adjust before the numbers force the issue, holding market position and political position together as one problem.
The evidence for this is not consultancy folklore. When Audi bought Lamborghini in 1998 the company was bankrupt in all but name; we tracked that relationship across twenty-two years and found that Audi treated control as a dial, loosening and retightening the unit’s autonomy as conditions changed, while sales grew thirty-five-fold. The study ran in Administrative Science Quarterly. The practice runs on the same finding: what renews firms is disciplined, repeated realignment, and that is a capability a leadership team can build.
Origin
The rock of Barra.
Where the River Lee rises in the mountains of West Cork, Finbarr built his sixth-century island monastery at the place the Irish call Guagán Barra, the rock of Barra. The firm takes its name from that place in West Cork.
